Wine records the nature of a place and the people who live there.
As a husband-and-wife team, we grow grapes on this land and make wine with the aim that the place itself can be understood through the wine.
Kanai Winery was founded in 1962 in Manriki, Yamanashi City, Yamanashi Prefecture.
Since then, the family-run winery has handled everything from grape cultivation to winemaking and sales.
Through the careful craftsmanship possible on a small scale and a willingness to pursue creative approaches, it has played a role in the continuing evolution of Japanese wine.
The winery manages 0.6 hectares of estate vineyards.
It researches approaches including reduced-pesticide cultivation and biodynamics, and works with its contracted grape growers as well as in its own vineyards to produce fruit in the best possible condition.
Alongside Japan's indigenous Koshu and Delaware, it grows European wine-grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay.
