ABOUT

Connecting fertile land to the future.

FEATURE STORY

Concept

The vineyards and winery are scattered along the banks of the Hikawa River in the Katsunuma area of Yamanashi Prefecture. Located along a pleasant wind corridor, the vineyards have excellent drainage and receive abundant sunshine, producing aromatic grapes. Even within Yamanashi Prefecture, grapes develop distinctive flavors depending on the area. We harvest each vineyard at the timing best suited to its environment, then vinify each plot separately so that the climate and character of the land can be expressed directly in the wine. We want to face the land honestly and enjoy wines that taste of grapes grown only here. We believe that practicing these simple principles is what will connect this fertile land to the future.

A Systematic Approach to Winemaking

To respect terroir, we organize our winemaking around grape variety and vineyard. Japanese native varieties are grown in Japanese soil and vinified where they are cultivated. We continue to pursue flavors that can only be born in that particular place and in that particular vintage.

Commitment to Terroir

Even with the same grape variety, each site brings its own character: from the well-drained vineyards around Katsunuma, located in a wind corridor along the Hikawa River, to the vineyards of Hosaka, set on hills around 500 meters above sea level with large day–night temperature differences. And even within the same vineyard, the climate changes from year to year through differences in sunshine, rainfall and temperature. MGVs Winery vinifies each vineyard separately, delivering wines that honestly express the blessings of the local climate and terroir.
