Hiraodai in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, is one of Japan's leading karst plateaus, with distinctive soils and scenery.
At Domaine Miyaki, the belief is that growing grapes here and sharing the work of cultivation can create stronger connections — between people, between urban and rural communities, and ultimately between people and nature.
A visit to the hills of Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux inspired the decision to make wine.
With the aim of producing wine from European grape varieties on Hiraodai, 500 vines were planted here in autumn 2008 and spring 2009. After roughly a decade of work, the project is still developing, but it has succeeded in producing its first wine.
The wines are made from European grape varieties.
