Itoshima is a town blessed with excellent local seafood, including wild red sea bream from one of Japan’s leading catches.
As restaurant operators committed to local fish, we wanted to help nurture the environment in which that seafood can be enjoyed, so we established a winery in Itoshima and made wine to accompany the local catch.
At a winery by the sea, grapes are grown using marine resources such as oyster shells, then enjoyed alongside seafood.
We hope many people will enjoy this truly “sea-raised wine.”
As Itoshima's first winery, Itoshima Masue Winery works in a landscape surrounded by sea and mountains under the theme “wine nurtured by the sea,” making wines intended to pair naturally with locally caught fish from Itoshima.
The winery's roots are in a restaurant in Itoshima City dedicated to dishes made with locally caught fish.
A research visit to Spain's Basque Country revealed the appeal of pairing local wine with local seafood, as well as the pride people there take in their town and culture. That experience inspired the team to protect not only the fish themselves, but also the ways of life and culture surrounding them, leading to the challenge of creating vineyards and a winery in Itoshima.
The goal goes beyond wine: it is to create a positive cycle within the region.
While offering fresh, crisp wines that pair with Japanese cuisine, izakaya dishes, yakitori, sushi, and more, the winery hopes to:
1. Share a food culture that celebrates local ingredients with wine; 2. Create opportunities for greater interest in primary industries such as agriculture and fisheries; and 3. Help increase the value and appeal of Itoshima and Fukuoka.
