Winemaking in Harmony with Nature: Visiting Okuizumo Winery

NORIZO1 min read

When you think of Shimane Prefecture, what comes to mind? Izumo Taisha, perhaps? The Izumo mythology passed down in this region is also famous. The Okuizumo region, setting for the mythical tale of Yamata no Orochi (the eight-headed serpent), is the destination for our winery visit.

CHAPTER 01

Okuizumo Vineyard, surrounded by lush forests rich in nature

Okuizumo Vineyard is located deep in the mountains in Kisuki-cho, Unnan City, Shimane Prefecture. Surrounded by a rich natural environment, this winery owns a 3-hectare estate vineyard and produces 50,000 bottles annually.

This time, we spoke with Mr. Abe, the company representative who is also a winemaker, about the charm of Okuizumo Vineyard.

The name "Okuizumo" has a wonderfully mythical ring to it, making for a lovely winery setting. It is easily accessible from Izumo Airport, and there are various sightseeing spots in the surrounding area. Be sure to pay a visit when you travel to Shimane Prefecture.
