FEATURE STORY

The History of Mars Wine

Yamanashi Mars Winery was established in 1960.

It is located in Isawa, in Yamanashi's Kofu Basin, with the Southern Alps to the west and Mount Fuji to the south.

Aiming to create wines that can stand on the world stage, the winery has produced many wines under the “Mars Wine” brand.

High-quality grapes are grown through contract cultivation with outstanding growers across Yamanashi and at the winery's own Hinoshiro Vineyard on the Hosaka hills at the foot of Mount Kayagatake.

Using advanced winemaking techniques, the winery produces high-quality wines that express Japan's climate and landscape, while continuing to pursue new value in Japanese wine that is uniquely Mars.

Yamanashi Terroir

A wine's individuality is shaped by terroir, grapes, human involvement, and the passage of time. The grapes used for our wines are grown in the viticultural areas of Hosaka, Shirane, Isawa, Misaka, and Makioka.

The characteristics of each growing area are defined by “terroir”—natural factors that people cannot significantly alter, including climate such as temperature and rainfall, sunlight exposure, topography such as elevation and slope, and soil conditions including geology and water.

WINE

Under the theme “a harmony of rich flavor and elegant aroma,” we devote ourselves to producing high-quality wines, represented by the Ch. Mars series, from grapes nurtured by Yamanashi's soils.

In recent years, we established Mars Hosaka Winery at the Hinoshiro Vineyard.

In this cool highland area with long hours of sunshine, we use gravity flow—a method that harnesses natural gravity and minimizes stress on the grapes—making it possible to produce even higher-quality wines.

Mars wines are born through the work of two sites: Mars Hosaka Winery, the center for vinification, and Mars Yamanashi Winery, the center for maturation, storage, and bottling.

◆ Underground Cellar Filled with the Aroma of Wine

Murals themed around wine and grapes decorate the cellar, allowing visitors to enjoy learning about wine history while viewing the artwork. At the shop and tasting area, seven to eight wines and grape juice are available for tasting. A variety of old-vintage wines from Japan and abroad can also be sampled by the glass.

◆ Reservation-Only Guest Room for Deepening Your Love of Wine

The underground guest room is available to groups of five or more. With explanations from staff, guests can enjoy paid tastings of award-winning wines and other selections.
