From June 2, Yamagata-based Tohoku Bankokusha will begin selling coffee aged in wine barrels.
The product is a collaboration with Cave d'Occi in Niigata.
Here are the details.
About Barrel-Aged Coffee
Tohoku Bankokusha is a company that has long delivered fresh, flavorful coffee under the motto of valuing relaxing moments.
This time, the company has collaborated with Cave d'Occi Winery, one of Japan's leading wineries, to create a new barrel-aged coffee using a wine barrel.
The company previously attracted attention with Barrel-Aged Coffee No.2 through No.6, which were aged in whisky barrels.
This is its first attempt at wine-barrel aging, combining the rich aroma of wine with the flavor of coffee to create a distinctive profile.
About the Coffee
The new barrel-aged coffee uses aromatic beans aged for three months in a red-wine barrel from Cave d'Occi Winery.
Green Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Konga beans are aged inside a barrel previously used for Cave d'Occi's flagship Sable Rouge. The light character of Ethiopian coffee gains the weight and depth of red wine, creating a denser cup.
The coffee shows juicy notes reminiscent of red wine, raisins, and blood orange, followed by a sweet, bittersweet finish like dark chocolate.
A coffee that should interest Japanese-wine fans as well.
Be sure to check it out.
