The “Japan Wine Competition (Japanese Wine Competition) 2022” is one of the largest wine competitions in Japan, held annually to improve the quality and recognition of Japanese wine made from 100% Japanese-grown grapes, as well as to enhance the image of each wine-producing region and elevate the individuality and status of Japanese wine.
Although it was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is a historic and prestigious wine competition celebrating its 18th edition in 2022 since its first holding in 2003.
About the Award-Winning Wines of “Château Mercian”
“Château Mercian Mariko Syrah 2019” won the Gold Award in the “European Varieties Red” category at this competition.
This red wine is made using grapes from “Mariko Vineyard,” an estate-managed vineyard located on the Jinba Plateau in the Maruko district of Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. It features spicy aromas reminiscent of black fruits and white pepper, offering a harmonious balance of pleasant acidity and fruitiness.
Regarding the award, Mitsuhiro Anzo, General Manager of Château Mercian, commented: “It was in 2004 that we planted Syrah at the Mariko Vineyard in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. Fifteen years have passed since then, and I truly feel that it has become one of the varieties that express the terroir of Japan. Going forward, under the slogan ‘Fostering Japan into one of the world's renowned wine regions,’ we want to continue making wine with sincerity.”
