“Château Mercian Mariko Vineyard” has been officially certified as a nationally certified site for coexistence with nature.
Through business operations that contribute to biodiversity conservation, it aims to achieve “nature positive” outcomes and contribute to the global “30by30” target.
Here are the details.
About the Official Certification as a Nationally Certified Site for Coexistence with Nature
In order to achieve the “30by30” target adopted as a new global goal at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) held in December 2022, the Ministry of the Environment has been operating a system since fiscal year 2023 to certify areas with high biodiversity owned by the private sector, local governments, and others as nationally certified sites for coexistence with nature.
Once officially certified as a nationally certified site for coexistence with nature, it is also registered in the international OECM database.
Based on the results obtained through joint research with NARO, Kirin Holdings Company, Limited applied to the Ministry of the Environment for Mercian Corporation's “Château Mercian Mariko Vineyard” (hereinafter referred to as Mariko Vineyard) to be recognized as a nationally certified site for coexistence with nature.
It was recently reported to have received official certification.
About “Mariko Vineyard”
“Mariko Vineyard” is an estate-managed vineyard of approximately 29 hectares established by Mercian in 2003 in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture, where eight grape varieties—including “Merlot,” “Chardonnay,” “Syrah,” and “Sauvignon Blanc”—are cultivated using vertical shoot positioning and sod culture.
“Mariko Vineyard” is the only site officially certified as a nationally certified site for coexistence with nature that produces agricultural products as a commercial business, and they believe it has been recognized as a case study that leads to “nature positive” outcomes through business activities.
Why not visit “Mariko Vineyard,” where beautiful scenery, magnificent grapes, and biodiversity coexist?
