Seeking to create ideal soil for grape growing, the winery reclaimed a vast tract of barren land in Asagarano, Ritto City, Shiga Prefecture,
and completed the major undertaking of reversing the soil layers by exchanging the topsoil and subsoil.
The result was the ideal vineyard that now forms this winery.
In vineyards blessed with abundant sunlight and wide day-night temperature differences, no herbicides are used,
and the grapes are cultivated with meticulous care through thoroughly organic farming practices.
Ritto Winery (Lake Biwa Winery) has been making wine in earnest for more than 50 years.
It is a winery that has consistently focused on handcrafted, naturally oriented wines.
On its seven-hectare estate farm, developed from the soil up,
no chemical fertilizers or herbicides are used at all;
the grapes used for winemaking are grown only with organic fertilizers.
