ABOUT

Making wine with pride in values unique to Japan.

That is our philosophy.

FEATURE STORY

World-Class Wine from Matsumoto-Grown Grapes

In pursuing both world-class winemaking and the creation of a distinctly Japanese wine region, the winery arrived at the former Shiga Village area of Matsumoto City. At an elevation of 720 meters, the area offers south-facing steep slopes, large day-night temperature differences, and mineral-rich soils—conditions well suited to grape growing.\n\nMerlot and Chardonnay grown by contracted farmers using Yamato Wine’s proprietary canopy-management methods have earned strong praise from sommeliers and wine advisors in Nagano. The Merlot red wine received a Gold Medal at Monde Selection in 2001, while the Chardonnay sparkling wine received a Silver Medal at the Japan Wine Competition in 2012.

Exploration, Revival, and Preservation

Six grape varieties are said to have existed in Japan since ancient times: Koshu, Ryugan, Koshu Sanshaku, Murasaki Budou, Suisho Budou, and Juraku Budou. Of these, the four varieties confirmed to still exist—Koshu, Ryugan, Koshu Sanshaku, and Murasaki Budou—are being cultivated by Yamato Wine.\n\nYamato Wine believes that seeking out Japan’s traditional grape varieties across the country and evaluating their suitability for winemaking is extremely important for the future of Japanese wine.
