ABOUT

Making enchanting wine at the foot of the Utsukushigahara Highlands.

FEATURE STORY

A Winery Born in Grape Country

Yamabe Winery makes wine primarily from grapes grown in the Yamabe district of Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture.\n\nSince its founding, it has never used imported wine or concentrated grape juice.\n\nThe vineyards spread across elevations of 650 to 780 meters. Under the relatively cool climate, the grapes develop firm flavors and refreshing acidity well suited to winemaking.

Winemaking to Captivate the Senses

Contract growers cultivate a broad range of grapes under favorable conditions and with skilled techniques. Vitis labrusca varieties include Delaware, Niagara, and Concord; hybrids include Kyoho, Muscat Bailey A, and Sun Semillon; and Vitis vinifera varieties include Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.\n\nYamabe Winery also maintains its own vineyard, growing Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, and other varieties. Its wines are made entirely from grapes grown on the Matsumoto Plain, centered on fruit from Yamabe. Growers and winemakers alike put their care and commitment into both the grapes and the resulting Yamabe wines.

Wine & Restaurant Mariage

The restaurant “Mariage,” located on the grounds of Yamabe Winery, takes its name from the French word for “marriage” or a “happy encounter,” a term often used for an ideal pairing of wine and food.\n\nIn the calm, wood-toned dining room overlooking the majestic Northern Alps, guests can enjoy Yamabe Winery wines at a relaxed pace.\n\nThe menu makes generous use of fresh ingredients from the Yamabe area and the flavors of each season. Italian-inspired dishes prepared by the chef are served alongside Yamabe wines.

Farmers Garden Yamabe

Farmers Garden Yamabe, adjoining Yamabe Winery, sells a wide seasonal selection of Shinshu produce, including grapes, freshly harvested highland vegetables, apples, peaches, dairy products, and more.\n\nAnother attraction is the selection of mountain ingredients unique to the region, such as wild vegetables in spring and mushrooms in autumn.\n\nThis fresh-produce market is lively with both Matsumoto residents visiting the winery and travelers heading to Utsukushigahara or the Venus Line.
