ABOUT

In 2022, Kamakura welcomed its first winery.

It began from the wish to make genuine Kamakura wine—using grapes grown in Kamakura and vinifying them in Kamakura.

At the adjoining farm wine shop, café and marché “Domaine Natsume,” visitors can enjoy the flavors of Kamakura.

FEATURE STORY

A Winery Is Born in Kamakura in 2022

Founder, grower, and winemaker Mr. Natsume's challenge took shape in 2022: “I want to make Kamakura wine — wine made in Kamakura from grapes grown in Kamakura, something no one has done before,” and “I want to create a place where people can come together through wine.”

The winery has two vineyards within Kamakura City and makes wine from those grapes at this urban winery.

One of his dreams is to hold a harvest festival in Kamakura in the near future.

At the stylish Domaine Natsume café, where the winery can be seen through glass, visitors can enjoy Kamakura wine, local vegetables, and a relaxed, enriching experience.

Egg Tanks, Still Rare in Japan

There are no stainless-steel tanks in sight inside the winery. Instead, rows of unfamiliar plastic egg-shaped vessels — “egg tanks” — line the space.

Mr. Natsume's wines are generally both fermented and matured in these tanks, although some barrels are also used.

The tanks are made from a special oxygen-permeable resin and were imported from the United States.

That helps explain why they are still rarely seen in Japan, though some famous châteaux in Bordeaux are also known to use egg-shaped tanks.

Meet the Japanese Wine Producer

Shingo Natsume

Founder, Representative Director, and Head Winemaker of Kamakura Winery; J.S.A.-certified Senior Sommelier

While working as a company employee, Natsume encountered the idea that “in an age of 100-year lifespans, if there is something you want to do in your second life, preparation should begin in your forties.” While continuing his day job, he spent weekends farming and steadily studied viticulture and winemaking.

He cultivated grapes in Kamakura and trained in winemaking at Tokyo Winery, finally releasing his long-awaited first wine in December 2022.

A Vineyard Overlooking the Sea and Another Bathed in Sunlight

The winery currently has two vineyard sites, in Sekiya and Shichirigahama, totaling about 0.5 hectares.

Mr. Natsume personally cleared and opened up former woodland containing around 200 mature trees more than 10 meters tall.

He rebuilt the soil, including deep turning to a depth of about three meters.

(At the time he was still a company employee and reportedly rented an excavator he had never used before to carry out the land-clearing work himself from scratch.)

The Shichirigahama vineyard is close to the sea, and the resulting wines show a distinct mineral character.

The Sekiya vineyard, although within Kamakura, has little around it to block the sun, giving the vines long hours of abundant sunlight. Good air circulation is another feature.

Both sites are on slopes and planted densely in vertical trellis systems, reflecting Natsume's ongoing trial and error in finding cultivation methods suited to this place.

A Distinctive Approach to the Label

The label, with an atmosphere reminiscent of Greek mythology, was created by yuyu, an artist who also lives in Kanagawa Prefecture.

Back in 2019, before the winery had opened, Mr. Natsume visited yuyu without an appointment at an exhibition in a department store and reportedly said on the spot, “I will definitely make wine in Kamakura someday, and when I do, please let me use one of your paintings for the label!”

Two years later, once the wine had been made, he contacted the artist again. This time, yuyu created an original work specifically for Kamakura Winery.

The resulting label beautifully combines Natsume's passion for wine with yuyu's hopes for Kamakura wine.

The image of a modern goddess gazing at a cup in Shichirigahama seems almost to envision a future in which Kamakura becomes established as a wine-producing region.

Buy and Enjoy Kamakura Vegetables

Colorful Kamakura vegetables line the shopfront.

They are truly delicious local vegetables selected by Mr. Natsume, who is himself a farmer and knows the produce firsthand.

Even during the editorial team's visit, local residents came continuously to buy them.

Being chosen by food-savvy neighbors is one sign that the vegetables really are excellent.

At the attached Domaine Natsume café, where guests can look into the winery, visitors can also enjoy these Kamakura vegetables and excellent cheeses that Natsume is able to source through his own connections.*

On a fine day, enjoying them on the terrace with the Kamakura breeze is especially pleasant.
