ABOUT

The Seto Inland Sea is celebrated for a beautiful seascape woven from more than a thousand islands of every size.

In summer, sunlight pours down; in winter, beautiful skies are reflected on calm waters.

“We want to make wine on Japan’s most beautiful island!”

With that passion, we are taking on grape growing on Omishima in the Seto Inland Sea.

FEATURE STORY

Making Wine That Expresses the Character of the Island

The story began with an island-development project launched when the Toyo Ito Museum of Architecture opened on Omishima. The dream that “surely great wine can be made here” grew from one person’s vision into a shared goal.\n\nLocated at the center of the Shimanami Kaido connecting Honshu and Shikoku, Omishima is a beautiful island covered with citrus orchards. Yet as the population ages and declines, more farmers are abandoning citrus cultivation each year, raising serious concerns for the island’s economy. Omishima Minna no Winery therefore decided to lease abandoned citrus fields, convert them to wine-grape cultivation, and establish the island’s first winery.

The Winery’s Vision

The possibilities for producing wine worthy of Omishima’s beautiful landscape inspire an ambitious vision. Wine can also serve as a bridge between people in cities and people on the island. Establishing a winery, however, requires considerable funding and time. Omishima Minna no Winery began this project from scratch with a strong desire to revitalize and renew the island through hands-on effort.\n\nThe first grapes grown on Omishima were harvested in 2017, and wine production began through contract vinification. In autumn 2019, the Omishima winery was completed. Today, everything from grape cultivation to winemaking is carried out entirely on the island.

VINEYARD — Continuing to Develop the Vineyards

In 2015, abandoned citrus orchards were leased and converted into vineyards, marking the beginning of Omishima’s first cultivation of wine grapes. Against the backdrop of the beautiful Seto Inland Sea islands, vines rooted in Omishima continue to grow vigorously. Although Omishima is known as a citrus island, it also has a climate and well-drained soils well suited to wine grapes.\n\nFour keywords define grape growing here: landscape, climate, soil, and terrain.\n\nLandscape: The sun rises from the sea and sets over it, watching over the vines throughout the day.\nClimate: Very similar to Katsunuma in Yamanashi, supporting richly flavored wines.\nSoil: Gravelly sandy loam is ideal for ripening grapes.\nTerrain: Gently sloping south-facing vineyards nurture delicious fruit.

Winery

The winery was completed on the island in autumn 2019.\n\nLocated in the Munakata district next to the Ken Iwata Mother and Child Museum and Furusato Ikoi-no-Ie, the site opens onto a sandy beach behind the building. The winery has a gentle architectural character, highlighted by skylights inspired by traditional tobacco-drying sheds.
