Kyoraku Entertainment & Retails Co., Ltd. has launched the "Nagoya Wine" project in collaboration with Blue Chip Co., Ltd., a winemaking company based in Tokoname.
Under the theme of "local production for local consumption," they aim to create "Nagoya Wine," an endeavor no one has achieved before.
Let us take a closer look at the details.
Exploring New Business Focused on "Local Production for Local Consumption"
In recent years, the importance of local production for local consumption has been drawing renewed attention.
As the company continued to explore new businesses aligned with the SDGs centered around "local production for local consumption," one answer they arrived at was this "Nagoya Wine" project.
"Nagoya Wine" refers to wine made from grapes grown in Nagoya City and vinified within Nagoya City in accordance with the national wine labeling standards, by establishing an "urban winery"—a rarity nationwide—within Nagoya City.
While urban wineries already exist in Tokyo, Osaka, and elsewhere, "Nagoya Wine" represents a pioneering effort that no one has attempted before.
First Release of "Nagoya Wine" Scheduled for 2025
In terms of the project's progress, a vineyard was first prepared in Midori Ward, Nagoya City, this spring.
Along with the start of wine grape cultivation, a winery facility was constructed within the Endoji Shopping Street in Nishi Ward of the city.
Blue Chip is in charge of grape cultivation and winemaking.
Kyoraku Entertainment & Retails is responsible for marketing and branding.
The first release of "Nagoya Wine," made from grapes grown in Nagoya City and vinified within the city, is scheduled for 2025.
Great Expectations for "Nagoya Wine"!
Although Tokoname City in Aichi Prefecture was originally thought to have a warm Pacific coastal climate unsuitable for wine grape growing, Mr. Baba, president of Blue Chip, opened Tokoname Winery in 2018 based on his passion for Tokoname and scientific soil data.
Through repeated trial and error turned into valuable experience, they have now reached the point of releasing Tokoname wines across seven varietals.
Among them, "Tokoname Pinot Noir Rosé 2020" won the top 5-star award in a blind tasting feature by the wine magazine "Wine Kingdom" in 2021.
Let us look forward to the future of "Nagoya Wine" emerging from Aichi Prefecture.
