Misaki Kanko Co., Ltd. of the Keikyu Group, in sympathy with the vision of the Koajiro Tourism Promotion and Revitalization Study Council, has officially begun full-scale support for the "Koajiro Bay Subsea Wine Aging Project" this year.
On Monday, December 13, 2021, the work of carefully submerging the wine bottles was carried out.
This unique project submerges wine to age on the seabed of the tranquil Koajiro Bay.
Here, we share the details of this endeavor.
What is "Subsea Aged Wine"?
"Subsea aged wine" refers to wine bottles that have been submerged on the ocean floor and aged for six months over the winter.
It is said that the sea-bottom sand and the minute vibrations of the waves promote aging, and numerous subsea aged wines are commercially available today.
In this project, the wine is submerged in Koajiro Bay, which possesses conditions rare in Japan, featuring stable water temperatures and calm waves.
It is said to combine conditions truly worthy of being called a "natural wine cellar."
In addition, the bay is known as a scenic marine resort blessed with a rich natural environment, and the Keikyu Group regards it as an important location.

Scheduled to be retrieved in June 2022
The total number of wine bottles gathered through public recruitment for this project was approximately 1,700, the highest number ever.
On December 13, fishermen from the Miura Fisheries Cooperative carefully submerged some of the wine bottles onto the seabed of Koajiro Bay.
The "subsea aged wine" submerged this time is scheduled to be hauled up in June 2022, and the next round of public applications will begin in July.
In the future, aiming to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society—including regional revitalization and an inclusive community through general sales and gifts for Miura City's hometown tax donation—the Keikyu Group will unite to provide support through PR activities, sales cooperation, and events.
Why not age your own cherished wine?
All 1,700 wine bottles gathered are scheduled to be submerged by the end of the year.
Through its support for this project, Misaki Kanko Co., Ltd. of the Keikyu Group hopes to build further momentum toward achieving the "Revitalization of Miura as an Urban-Suburban Resort," as set forth in its comprehensive management plan.
