On September 1, 2022, crowdfunding for a unique item began on CAMPFIRE.
That item is the "Tono & Kiso Hinoki Decanter," hailing from a workshop in Oku-Mino.
This item is said to dramatically transform inexpensive wine into something delicious.
Let's take a look at the details.
A Magical Decanter
The "Tono & Kiso Hinoki Decanter" is a magical decanter that dramatically alters the aroma and flavor of alcoholic beverages.
Crafted in a workshop in Higashishirakawa Village in the Oku-Mino region of Gifu Prefecture, where artisans thoroughly understand the properties of hinoki (Japanese cypress), it is said to be a product of great pride.
Given the local environment, the discerning staff—who routinely dine on fresh sweetfish (ayu) and wild game (gibier)—conceived this hinoki decanter capable of adding a Japanese flavor to Western spirits and wines while enjoying drinks matched to such gourmet cuisine daily.
Prototypes were made, and repeated tasting sessions were held with a wide variety of drinks ranging from wine, whisky, and vodka to grappa, rakı, Moutai, and even Vietnamese shochu; everyone was reportedly astonished by how the flavors shifted constantly like a cat's eyes depending on the amount of liquor and decanting time.
Table Wine (Red) Dramatically Transformed!
Among the above, what surprised the staff the most was an inexpensive boxed table wine (red).
Its flavor, which initially had slight off-tastes, was reportedly transformed—thanks to the polyphenols, tannins, and other components in the hinoki—into a taste resembling an aged, full-bodied wine.
Experience It with Your Own Five Senses
The "Tono & Kiso Hinoki Decanter" is a natural-material decanter that adds a Japanese flavor to alcoholic beverages such as wine.
Furthermore, Tono hinoki and Kiso hinoki contain abundant hinokitiol, which is rare in standard Japanese hinoki, and are also said to offer relaxation effects.
According to the development staff, they hope people will enjoy it in large groups during camping or glamping trips.
One naturally wonders what kind of decanter it actually is.
Shipping is scheduled to begin around November, so if you are interested, why not check out CAMPFIRE?
