Among Tokyo's urban wineries, many people may already know Fukagawa Winery for its cute and distinctive labels.
Fukagawa Winery celebrated its sixth anniversary this year and held a commemorative event on November 15, 2022.
At the venue, we spoke with chief winemaker Ueno and public relations representative Irei.
Growing Grapes on a Building Rooftop
Fukagawa Winery currently grows grapes on the rooftop of a building.
The building houses a supermarket called Akafudado.
More than 100 grapevines are cultivated in special planters.
The first harvest came in 2020, the third year after cultivation began. Those grapes were used as yeast for the wine and were reportedly included in all wines produced in 2020—a true first step toward “wine from Fukagawa.”
The 2022 nouveau wine was also very vibrant and fresh, with a pleasantly lively taste.
Fukagawa Winery continues to take on new challenges. It is easily accessible, just a short distance from Monzen-Nakacho in Tokyo, so be sure to visit.
