Aging Barrels Also from Yamanashi! "ALL YAMANASHI" "2021 Tabayama Wine Chardonnay" Released!

From Tabayama Village in Yamanashi Prefecture comes the release of "2021 Tabayama Wine Chardonnay," a white wine aged in barrels made from the village's own mizunara oak.

From grapes to barrels, everything is sourced from Yamanashi Prefecture, making it a truly special "ALL YAMANASHI" wine.

Let us take a closer look at the details.

About the ALL YAMANASHI Wine

"2021 Tabayama Wine Chardonnay" was released this time from Tabayama Village, Yamanashi Prefecture.

Although Tabayama Village in Yamanashi Prefecture does not grow grapes, with 98% of its land covered by forest, wine barrels were crafted this time using mizunara oak grown in the village's mountains.

In the first place, while Yamanashi Prefecture is known as one of the country's leading wine-producing regions, almost 100 percent of the barrels used are imported products made from American or European wood.

The village reportedly pursued this development thinking of how it could contribute to the "Wine Prefecture" with the aim of creating an "ALL YAMANASHI wine."

Into High-Quality Aging Barrels

For this project, there were reportedly many skeptical voices asking, "Can barrels really be made from Tabayama Village wood?", and it took more than two years just to secure a budget.

Despite various difficulties, collaborators were found across the stages of logging, processing, barrel assembly, and wine aging—commissioning lumber milling and processing to companies in Toyama and Gifu prefectures and barrel assembly to a company in Kyoto Prefecture—successfully realizing the "ALL YAMANASHI wine."

Chardonnay from Okunota Winery

The newly released "2021 Tabayama Wine Chardonnay" is a white wine made from 100% Chardonnay grapes harvested from Okunota Winery's own estate vineyards in 2021.

The company's president, Mr. Nakamura, commented, "Fragrant aromas of white flowers and musk meld with vanilla and nutty scents derived from the wine barrels made from Tabayama Village mizunara oak, resulting in a gorgeously aromatic, wonderfully lucid wine combining rich fruit flavors and supple acidity," making it an exceptionally charming bottle.
