Coco Farm Stars in Part 2 of “A New Era for Tochigi Wine” Relay Lecture at Académie du Vin Aoyama

The second installment of the relay lecture series “A New Era for Tochigi Wine,” held at Académie du Vin’s Aoyama school to explore the appeal of Tochigi wine, features one of the region’s best-known names: Coco Farm & Winery.

Let’s take a closer look at the program.

Tochigi is one of Japan’s major fruit-growing regions and has a winemaking history stretching back some 140 years. In recent years its potential has attracted growing attention, with new wineries opening one after another.

The prestigious wine school Académie du Vin is presenting the relay lecture series “A New Era for Tochigi Wine,” and the second session welcomes Coco Farm & Winery.

Coco Farm’s wines are known for a natural approach: no chemical fertilizers or herbicides are used, and fermentation at the winery relies mainly on naturally occurring wild yeasts and lactic-acid bacteria.

Although Coco Farm makes wine from grapes grown around Japan, all six wines in this tasting are made exclusively from grapes grown in the winery’s own vineyards in Tochigi Prefecture. It is a rare opportunity to explore Coco Farm’s Tochigi wines while hearing directly from winemaker Toyoichiro Shibata.
