Before Sun Sun Winery was built, this land was abandoned farmland in disrepair.
Believing that winemaking could make use of the land’s distinctive character
and sustainably support both environmental conservation and regional development,
Sun Sun Winery was born.
In 2011, vineyards for wine grapes were established and planted midway along a mountain pass on the Nakasendo route connecting Shiojiri and Suwa in Nagano Prefecture.\n\nThe winery and shop & restaurant were completed in 2015.\n\nThat autumn, production of the first estate wine made entirely from grapes grown in the winery’s own vineyards began.
What matters most in winemaking is the character of the land where the grapes grow.\n\nEven within the same vineyard, the upper and lower parts of a slope can differ in soil and drainage, while terrain can change sunlight and airflow.\n\nThese subtle differences become part of the grapes’ individuality and are eventually expressed in the wine.\n\nMaking the most of the character of each site is the foundation of our winemaking philosophy.
Healthy grapes that fully reflect the character of the land can become wines of remarkably beautiful color.\n\nTo achieve this, we are uncompromising about maintaining a hygienic and clean environment throughout the entire process, from the moment harvested grapes arrive until the wine is shipped.\n\nBeautiful wine is born from a beautiful, clean environment.\n\nOur winery, designed for small-lot rather than high-volume production, is kept consistently clean.
Bottega is the shop and restaurant attached to SunSun Winery.\n\nThe shop offers souvenirs unique to Shinshu, while the restaurant serves dishes focused on local ingredients together with wines carefully produced at the winery.
