ABOUT

Château Mercian’s brand concept was born from the belief that “good wine is the direct expression of grapes nurtured by a place’s climate, terroir and producers.”

Everything intertwines deeply and complexly to form a single harmony. Nothing stands out, nothing is missing: a taste created by complete balance.

FEATURE STORY

Origins and History

While searching for an ideal site for high-quality grape growing, Château Mercian discovered this location on the Jinba plateau in the Maruko area of Ueda City, with abundant sunshine, low rainfall, good drainage and ventilation. At the time, the land included mulberry fields and had become partly idle and neglected, but with cooperation from local residents it was converted into vineyards, and Mariko Vineyard opened in 2003.\n\nSixteen years later, after the site had grown into a wine-producing area recognized internationally, Château Mercian Mariko Winery opened on a hill above the vineyard in September 2019.\n\nThe name “Mariko Vineyard” comes from Prince Mariko, a son of Emperor Kinmei, whose territory this area is said to have been in the latter half of the sixth century.

Mariko Vineyard

Mariko Vineyard is a vast vineyard covering an area roughly equivalent to six Tokyo Domes.\n\nAbout eight grape varieties, including Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc, are grown on trellises. Because the winery is surrounded by vineyards, the road leading to it is especially pleasant, with vines stretching out on both sides.\n\nBeyond Mariko Vineyard, on a small hill, lies Ippongi Park. Cherry blossoms fill the park in spring and cool shade appears in summer. It is an excellent place to look down over Mariko Winery. Picking up a bottle at the winery and enjoying it on a park bench while viewing the winery and vineyards is also recommended.

Hall: Winemaking Facilities and Barrel Cellar

From the first floor of the winery, visitors can look through large glass windows into the winemaking facilities and barrel cellar. Various stages of winemaking can be observed throughout the year, with the harvest-season production work especially recommended.

Tasting Counter

Around ten wines are usually available by the glass, either individually or in sets, including wines exclusive to Mariko Winery and wines from Château Mercian’s various production areas.\n\nSnacks made with local ingredients are also offered and change daily.\n\n・The menu may change without notice.\n・Some snacks are available from around lunchtime and in limited quantities.\n・All wines are charged separately.

Wine Shop

Around 30 wines are regularly available for purchase, including Mariko wines and wines from Château Mercian’s various production areas. Limited products available only here and original Mariko Winery goods are also offered.

Terrace

Mariko Winery is surrounded on all sides by vineyards. From the second-floor terrace, you can take in a sweeping view of Mariko Vineyard below, with spectacular scenery extending as far as Mt. Asama in the distance. The entire second floor is fitted with large glass windows, so you can also enjoy the view together with a glass of wine from indoors.
