ABOUT

Villa d’Est Winery is founded on grape growing and aims to make wines that reflect the terroir

and can be presented to the world.

FEATURE STORY

What Villa d'Est Winery Aims to Achieve

Villa d'Est Winery began winemaking in 2003 on a hill 850 meters above sea level in Tomi, Nagano Prefecture.

Its wines, made from carefully tended European wine-grape varieties, have received numerous honors, including the highest gold award at the Japan Wine Competition, and have come to be regarded as some of Japan's leading premium wines.

NAGANO WINE in particular is now attracting intense attention for its high quality.

Villa d'Est hopes to take a leading role in creating a new wine region where small wineries cluster together and an agriculture-based lifestyle can take root.

Vineyards

The eight-hectare vineyards contain more than 20,000 vines, centered on Merlot and Chardonnay. Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc have also come into stable production.

Winery Shop

Just inside the entrance, the winery shop sells wines, cider, distilled spirits, and other beverages produced at Villa d'Est.

It also offers a wide range of original goods and books, including tableware, stationery and miscellaneous items decorated with Toyoo Tamamura's artwork, as well as juice and dried flowers from the garden.

Paintings by Tamamura displayed in the gallery downstairs are also available for purchase.

Villa d'Est Café

The winery café offers seasonal menus built around vegetables and herbs harvested from the garden, produce from local farmers, and a variety of ingredients made in Nagano Prefecture. At lunchtime, guests can enjoy a recommended lunch course, while on weekends a supper course is served as the sun sets over the Northern Alps.

Outside lunch hours, lighter meals, tea, and house-made sweets are also available. Naturally, guests can also enjoy paid tastings of Villa d'Est wines.

Garden & Farm

Next to the winery is a farm garden filled with vegetables, flowers, and herbs. From the central terrace, visitors can look out over eastern Nagano, where the Chikuma River flows, with the magnificent Northern Alps visible in the distance. From fresh spring greenery to autumn foliage, flowers bloom with each changing season, displaying the distinctive beauty of the highlands.

From mid-May through June, clematis, hydrangeas, lavender, and other flowers bloom, and together with the fresh green mountains the garden reaches its most beautiful season.

This landscape, colored by seasonal plants and flowers, is where Villa d'Est began.
