Plants absorb nutrients when they are available in the soil. Over time, grapevines can become overfed—almost “metabolic.” Such vines are more susceptible to disease and pests.\n\nPeople then respond by applying insecticides, fungicides, coloring agents, fertilizers, and other agrochemicals in pursuit of higher yields, creating a cycle of dependence.\n\nUnfortunately, once soil contains excessive nitrogen, restoring its balance is not easy. One of the few ways to do so is through the grasses and plants that naturally grow there.\n\nOver time, they slowly absorb excess nitrogen and help cleanse the soil.\n\nThe weeds we normally regard as nuisances are actually performing that role.\n\nFor this reason, Obuse Winery intends not to apply either organic or chemical fertilizers.\n\nIts goal is to make wines with deep, nourishing flavor.
