224WINERY has its vineyard, winery, and shop on a hill overlooking the islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
The founders cleared and leveled the forest themselves. While cultivating their grapevines, they initially made wine through contract winemaking.
After five years, they finally began producing wine in their own winery in the summer of 2022.
224WINERY’s flagship wine is “Shima-Chan,” which it has continued to produce since its contract-winemaking days.
It is a traditional-method sparkling wine made from Delaware and Chardonnay grapes, with secondary fermentation in the bottle.
Wines made from estate-grown grapes nurtured by the sea breeze and abundant sunshine of the Seto Inland Sea are called the “Shima (Island) Series,” a core range produced every year.
Because wine is a beverage of personal preference, the winemaker wants customers to be able to choose from a variety of styles to suit their tastes. Another range, the “Shodoshima Brewing Series,” uses grapes sourced from around Japan to create one-of-a-kind wines that reflect each encounter.
The winery also takes advantage of the fact that fruit wine can be made from fruits other than grapes, experimenting with Shodoshima specialties such as mandarins and strawberries.
Because this is a small winery run by four people, winery visits are available by advance reservation. (The winery is closed every Tuesday.)
Regular tastings are not offered, but pairing events featuring island ingredients and wine are held on an irregular basis at the winery and at restaurants on the island.
