In a small northern Tohoku town that includes Towada-Hachimantai National Park and Lake Towada,
a long-awaited winery is opening amid industrial heritage that recalls the town’s mining prosperity.
It stands along the Jukai Line leading from the town center toward Lake Towada.
Around the nearby Nanataki waterfall—one of Japan’s 100 celebrated waterfalls—a roadside station, farmers’ market and agricultural processing facilities form a hub for green tourism.
The winery will use grapes rooted in the region to make distinctive, serious Japanese wine,
and is expected to develop as a place where visitors can both see and experience winemaking.
