Hokkaido Wine Co., Ltd. began producing its first “organic wine” on October 1, 2025.
The wines, made from four varieties of organic grapes grown at the company-operated Hokkaido Wine Shiribeshi Vineyard, are scheduled for release in 2026.
Here are the details.
About the production of “organic wine”
In 2021, Hokkaido Wine obtained Organic JAS certification for organic agricultural products (grapes) at Hokkaido Wine Shiribeshi Vineyard. In April 2025, it released “Experimental Batch,” a trial wine made from the vineyard’s first vintage of organically grown grapes.
Furthermore, on August 20, 2025, the company’s head winery obtained Organic JAS certification for organic processed foods (wine), establishing a production system that complies with the Organic JAS framework throughout the entire process, from grape cultivation to winemaking.
Through this certification, the company says it will work to establish a stable production and supply system for Japanese organic wine that meets these new labeling standards.
Toward a next-generation model for Japanese wine
Hokkaido Wine has now obtained Organic JAS certification for both “organic grape cultivation” and “organic wine production.”
By combining sustainable viticultural techniques with quality control, the company has begun a new challenge toward a next-generation model for Japanese wine.
Wines made from four organic grape varieties—Chardonnay, Kerner, Acolon, and Pinot Noir—grown at the company-operated Hokkaido Wine Shiribeshi Vineyard are scheduled for release in 2026.
We look forward to their completion and release.
