Wine Barrels Installed as Monuments at Shiojiri Station! A Ceremony Will Also Be Held on Wednesday, March 16!

Shiojiri Station is known as "the only station in Japan with a grape trellis on its platform."

Wine barrels of great historical asset value have now been installed at both the East and West exits of Shiojiri Station.

A ceremony to commemorate this will be held on upcoming Wednesday, March 16.

Here, we introduce the details.

Shiojiri Station Is the Only Station in Japan with a Grape Trellis on Its Platform

Shiojiri Station is "the only station in Japan with a grape trellis on its station platform."

Shiojiri City in Nagano Prefecture is famous as a wine-producing region, and its Merlot in particular is beloved by wine enthusiasts nationwide.

At Shiojiri Station, there is Japan's only vineyard located on platforms 3 and 4, where Shiojiri's signature grape varieties, Merlot and Niagara, are cultivated.

The harvested grapes are brewed as "Station Wine" at a winery within the city.

Wine Barrels Installed Alongside the Vineyard!

In addition to the vineyard, wine barrels have now also been installed at Shiojiri Station.

The large barrels installed this time are said to be extremely valuable items that had been used as brewing casks for a long time since Daikoku Budoshu (now Château Mercian) expanded into Kikyogahara, Shiojiri City in 1938.

These wine barrels of great historical asset value have now been installed at the East and West exits of Shiojiri Station, the gateway to Shiojiri City.

They will surely contribute to further cementing the impression of "Shiojiri, the Wine Town."
