From Friday, January 31 through Monday, February 3, the Wine Culture Japan Heritage Council is exhibiting at IBARAKI sense in Ginza, Tokyo, for a PR event highlighting the Japan Heritage story “140 Years of Japanese Wine.”
Ushiku Chateau in Ibaraki Prefecture is known as Japan's first large-scale production winery.
Its 140-year winemaking history has been designated Japan Heritage together with Koshu City in Yamanashi Prefecture.
At Ushiku Chateau, whose architecture evokes a European castle, wine is still made today and visitors can experience the depth of its history.

At this second edition of the fair, local media representatives familiar with Ushiku and Ushiku Chateau staff are on hand to sell wines made at Ushiku Chateau, wine cakes and other Japan Heritage-related products while promoting “140 Years of Japanese Wine.”
Rare products normally available only at Ushiku Chateau are also expected to be on sale.
“An Evening Enjoying Ushiku Wine at IBARAKI sense” Also Held
On the first day of the fair, “An Evening Enjoying Ushiku Wine at IBARAKI sense” was held. Participants included House of Councillors member Masaaki Akaike of the Parliamentary League for Japan Heritage and Ushiku Deputy Mayor Shinichi Takaba, along with tourism and wine-industry guests, who enjoyed Ushiku wines and dishes made with Ibaraki ingredients.
Akaike, who was born in Koshu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, spoke about traditional ways of drinking wine in Katsunuma and the current state of Japanese wine, drawing strong interest from participants.
Deputy Mayor Takaba also introduced the history of full-scale winemaking in Katsunuma and Ushiku and explained how Ushiku City and Koshu City came to share the Japan Heritage story “140 Years of Japanese Wine.”
Masashi Yasuda, chief winemaker at Maruki Winery in Yamanashi Prefecture, told local Ushiku media, “It is important for Ushiku City and Koshu City, which are linked through Japan Heritage, to have opportunities to promote themselves together.”
