Japan's Wine Consumption Grows About 1.1x Over 10 Years; Kirin Holdings Sees Potential for Japanese Wine Growth

Kirin Holdings Company, Limited has released data on wine consumption in Japan.

The data show that wine consumption in Japan has expanded by about 1.1 times over the past 10 years, while also indicating encouraging signs for the growth of Japanese wine.

Here are the details.

Consumption Has Increased About Sixfold Over 40 Years

According to Kirin Holdings Company, Limited, wine consumption in Japan in 2022 was 99% of the previous year's level. Compared with 2012, 10 years earlier, the market had expanded to approximately 110%.

After events such as the sixth wine boom in 1997–98, driven by the popularity of red wine, and the seventh wine boom beginning in 2012, when interest grew in "Japanese wine" made from 100% Japan-grown grapes, wine consumption in Japan has increased roughly sixfold over the past 40 years.

This suggests that wine has become established as part of everyday life.

The Number of Wineries Producing "Japanese Wine" Is Increasing

According to a National Tax Agency survey, Japan had 468 wineries as of January 2023, up 15 from the previous year.

The number of wineries producing "Japanese wine" made from 100% Japan-grown grapes was also reported to have increased to 103% of the previous year's level.

In addition to Yamanashi Prefecture in first place, Nagano Prefecture in second, and Hokkaido in third, the number of wineries in fourth-ranked Yamagata Prefecture also increased.

Other data released show that France ranked first in sparkling wine import volume, with the market expanding by about 130% over 10 years.

For still wine imports, Chile returned to first place for the first time in three years, while European wines accounted for about 60% of the total.
