A Remarkable Feat for Camel Farm Winery in Yoichi, Hokkaido! First Gold Medal for Blaufränkisch at an International Wine Competition!

At the "Decanter World Wine Awards* 2022," Camel Farm Winery's "Blaufränkisch Private Reserve 2020" won a gold medal.

This marks the very first award won by a Japanese winery for the international variety "Blaufränkisch."

Let us take a closer look at the details.

About Camel Farm Winery

Camel Farm Winery is located in the Nobori district of Yoichi Town, overlooking the Sea of Japan, where sea breezes carry minerals.

It is a popular winery dedicated to winemaking that maximizes the appeal of grape varieties and the characteristics of the terroir from its 13-hectare trellised vineyards spreading over gentle hills.

The wine competition in which the winery entered, the "Decanter World Wine Awards*," is a historic and prestigious international wine contest organized by the British wine magazine "Decanter."

Winning an award there is a tremendous honor for Japanese wine as well.

About "Blaufränkisch Private Reserve 2020"

A total of 18,244 wines were entered in the "Decanter World Wine Awards* 2022" from 54 countries and regions.

Approximately 250 experts (including 41 Masters of Wine and 13 Master Sommeliers) reportedly conducted rigorous evaluations through blind tastings.

Blaufränkisch, the grape used for "Blaufränkisch Private Reserve 2020," is a traditional Austrian variety, and two labels from its native Austria were entered in this wine competition.

"Blaufränkisch Private Reserve 2020" scored higher than those from Austria, the grape's homeland, and was awarded a gold medal.

Featuring a beautifully brilliant, slightly purplish garnet color, "Blaufränkisch Private Reserve 2020" is a medium-bodied red wine that expresses a rich body and structure, seeking a balance with the fresh acidity characteristic of Yoichi.

It offers pleasant aromas reminiscent of stewed black cherries, redcurrants, and blackberries, notes of black pepper, balsamic vinegar, violets, and minerals, along with smoky nuances derived from oak barrels.

On the palate, the gentle sweetness of fruit and pleasant acidity brought about by the cool climate harmonize with the unique spiciness of Blaufränkisch, creating a complex and elegant wine with a fine balance of tannins and minerality.

The Appeal of Yoichi to the World

In recent years, Yoichi has been focusing on sharing its appeal not only within Japan but also across the globe.

This award is likely to serve as an opportunity to showcase the potential of Yoichi wines to the world.

Going forward, we can expect to see Yoichi wine play an active role on the international stage even more.
