"GRAPE REPUBLIC", with its winery located in Nanyo City, Yamagata Prefecture, released the new product "Cabernet Franc 2021" on Tuesday, April 18, 2023.
This marks the winery's first red wine featuring Cabernet Franc as the primary grape variety.
Let's take a look at the details.
First "Cabernet Franc"
Until now, "GRAPE REPUBLIC" has produced wines using varieties such as Delaware, Niagara, and Steuben, which are known as table grapes and also cultivated for winemaking.
However, the winery notes that while these wines are light, easy to drink, and pair well with Japanese cuisine, they cannot be considered mainstream in the global wine market.
Under such circumstances, cultivation of "Cabernet Franc", which held promise as a grape variety well-suited to the climate and terroir of the Okitama region, began in 2017.
After five years, the harvest yield finally increased enough to allow for winemaking, leading to the release of their first wine (first vintage).
Four Key Points of "Cabernet Franc 2021"
Here are the four key points of "Cabernet Franc 2021":
1. Uses Cabernet Franc from contracted grower Ogawa Farm
2. Fermented in amphora, then aged in stainless steel tanks
3. Plum-like fruitiness and green nuances reminiscent of burdock root
4. Pairs well with smoky dishes, as well as vegetables with green notes or earthy aromas (Tasting Comments)
In addition, you can enjoy its fresh flavor right after opening, as well as a softened profile on the second day.
