The Japan Viticulture Association (JVA) has launched a crowdfunding campaign.
The project is titled “For Japanese Wine 100 Years from Now — Building the Supply Base for Virus-Tested Grapevines.”

About the JVA project
The crowdfunding project aims to further improve the quality of Japanese wine and create a sustainable foundation for wine-grape cultivation.
To secure a stable supply of healthy, virus-tested planting material and identify varieties and clones suited to Japan’s climate, JVA plans to import diverse grape varieties and clones from around the world and establish a mother-vine vineyard that can manage them, functioning like a library of source vines.
The goal is to create an environment in which Japanese producers can cultivate high-quality grapes with confidence and make distinctive Japanese wines worthy of international recognition.
JVA argues that Japanese wine faces a critical situation for two main reasons:
• Viruses are spreading and reducing grape quality
• Varieties suited to Japan’s diverse climates have not yet been sufficiently identified
To address these issues and support sustainable industry growth, JVA wants to establish the mother-vine vineyard in Tomi City, Nagano Prefecture, where healthy virus-tested mother vines can be grown and a wide range of grape varieties supplied.
Returns for supporters
Main rewards include:
• JVA-exclusive charity wine
• Supporter names displayed on a board in the mother-vine vineyard
• Winery tour guided by a JVA director
• Private wine seminar by the representative director
JVA says it is taking on the project with a strong commitment to building the foundation of Japanese wine grapes for the next 100 years.
However, creating the mother-vine vineyard requires substantial support.
