Tomioka Town in Fukushima Prefecture and The Sankei Shimbun will hold a three-day “Discover Tomioka Today” tour from Saturday, August 16 for six parent-child pairs, 12 people in total, from the Tokyo metropolitan area.
The program also includes a BBQ lunch at Tomioka Winery.
Here are the details.
About the “Discover Tomioka Today” Tour
The tour is designed to show participants the present-day reality of Tomioka as the town rebuilds from the Great East Japan Earthquake and the accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. It also aims to counter harmful rumors and support the town’s recovery.
Participants will experience Tomioka through activities including flounder fishing from a charter boat, a cooking class on how to prepare flounder, and a dinner featuring a full course built around the fish.
They will also observe radioactive-material testing at a food inspection facility and attend a lecture on radiation to learn about food safety.
The program further introduces new recovery initiatives through a volunteer experience at Tomioka Wine Domaine, which grows grapes and makes wine, as well as a visit to an onion farmer.
Volunteer Experience at the Domaine
The “Discover Tomioka Today” tour begins on Saturday, August 16 in front of the Yaesu North Gate at Tokyo Station.
The itinerary includes an Obama Fudo Taiko drumming experience and exchange, a lecture titled “Tritium in Everyday Life,” and a flounder-focused dinner at Ra-Fand.
On Monday, August 18, participants will enjoy a BBQ lunch after volunteering at Tomioka Wine Domaine.
After stops including Aquamarine Fukushima, the tour returns to Tokyo Station.
