Tomio Holdings Co., Ltd. obtained a fruit-wine manufacturing license on October 8, 2025 and opened Chiba Winery, the first winery in Chiba City.
On Saturday, November 22, 2025, the winery inside Tomio Village Takashina plans to hold the TOMIO WINE FESTIVAL and unveil wines made at Chiba City’s first winery.
Here is an introduction to Chiba Winery, which is likely to attract growing attention.
About Chiba Winery

Chiba Winery is Chiba City’s first winery, operated by Tomio Holdings.
It obtained its fruit-wine manufacturing license on October 8, 2025.

In its first vintage, 2025, the winery plans to take on a wide range of production: contract-made wine from grapes grown in Sakura and Kashiwa; cider made from apples at Chiba University’s Numata Farm in Gunma; rosé made from black grapes grown in Matsudo; and Nashi-Awa sparkling liquor made from pears grown in Kashiwa.

The winery also owns a vineyard in Shimoda-cho, Wakaba Ward, Chiba City, where it cultivates 600 vines across 10 European varieties using Japan’s distinctive single-cordon short-spur training system.
The grape varieties include:
<Black grapes>
- Cabernet Franc
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Sangiovese
- Merlot
- Pinot Noir
- Syrah
<White grapes>
- Chardonnay
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Viognier
- Albariño
The winery plans to begin making “Chiba City wine” from estate-grown grapes in autumn 2026.
The Path and Potential Impact of Chiba City Wine

The planned start of Chiba City wine production in 2026 coincides with the historic 900th anniversary of the founding of Chiba.

Tomio Holdings is registered as a member supporting the Chiba 900th Anniversary initiative. By introducing Chiba City wine in this commemorative year, it aims to take a step toward the next century and ultimately the city’s 1,000th anniversary.
Chiba City wine could also generate wider benefits.
By connecting agriculture, alcoholic-beverage manufacturing and sales in an integrated sixth-sector model, the project can create new industries and employment while strengthening the regional brand.
Community-building through grape planting and harvest experiences can connect generations, while winery tours and tastings can become tourism resources attracting visitors from elsewhere in Japan and abroad.
The winery aims not only to be a place to enjoy wine but also a hub for learning, exchange and cultural creation, sharing information domestically and internationally and becoming a place loved across generations.

The winery’s logo and wine-label designs incorporate motifs that express Chiba City, including the deer silhouette used in Tomio’s own logo, the little tern—Chiba City’s official bird—and wave patterns representing the seaside, an element of the city’s urban identity.
The winery’s aspiration, “Light a wine culture in Chiba City that will last 100 years,” is expressed in those designs as well.
Support Chiba Winery

Chiba Winery is running its second crowdfunding campaign through Sunday, November 16, 2025.
Under the message “Light a wine culture in Chiba City that will last 100 years. All-Chiba-City Wine: The Next Challenge,” it is taking the next step toward wine produced entirely in Chiba City.
Project: Light a wine culture in Chiba City that will last 100 years. All-Chiba-City Wine: The Next Challenge.

On Saturday, November 22, 2025, TOMIO WINE FESTIVAL is also scheduled at Chiba Winery inside Tomio Village Takashina to celebrate completion of the year’s new wines.
It should be a special day marking a step in the city’s wine history.
Chiba Winery is likely to continue growing into a new symbol of Chiba City.
Let’s keep supporting its journey.
