On Sunday, June 28, 2026, the 6th JVA Symposium, comprising lectures and a wine tasting, will be held at the Convention Hall on the 2nd floor of the An Building, Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo.
The event is organized by the Japan Viticulture Association, JVA, and will feature a keynote address on PIWI by Bear Steinmann.
About the Symposium
The 6th JVA Symposium will introduce efforts involving new grape varieties that are now gaining momentum around the world as one possible response to challenges such as climate change and moves to reduce pesticide use.
The event will present the latest international developments surrounding PIWI varieties, representative disease-resistant grapes that remain little known in Japan. The tasting will also offer a rare opportunity to sample wines made from PIWI varieties.
Program
The symposium consists of two parts: lectures and a wine tasting.
The lecture session will include an explanation of future JVA initiatives by association directors and a PIWI keynote address. At the tasting, participants will be able to compare around 30 wines, primarily from PIWI varieties specially brought in from Italy for the event.
It is an exceptionally rare opportunity to experience a range of distinctive characteristics and quality levels.
Both JVA members and non-members may participate.
