According to the latest survey by Japan’s National Tax Agency, Iwate Prefecture has 17 wineries.
That is the fifth-highest number in Japan.
Of course, the region’s appeal goes beyond the number of wineries. Wines expressing Sanriku’s distinctive minerality and Austrian grape varieties are helping Iwate’s terroir become increasingly recognized.
To showcase those qualities, a tasting featuring six Iwate wineries was held in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

Participating Wineries
Kanda Vineyard
Albariño is a popular variety here, and the 2024 release is named “Albariño Nagi.”
Made from 100% Albariño, it showed generous aromatic volume and the breadth characteristic of the variety. Its minerality made it feel like a true “Albariño of the sea.”
Although the harvest came earlier than expected, it has developed into a very enjoyable Albariño.
Monnosuke Farm
There are likely many fans of its cider.
In addition to the standard Fuji apple version, a rare variety called Aorin was also presented.
Its blanc de noirs made from Merlot is another wine to watch, with a beautiful rosé appearance.
Edel Wine
Edel Wine is well known for Austrian grape varieties.
Its highly regarded still Grüner Veltliner has now been joined by a pétillant version.
The same series also includes a Monde Briller pétillant, reportedly limited to around 500 bottles.
Shiwa Winery
A still Monde Briller was available here, bursting with aromas reminiscent of lychee and white peach.
The winery also grows Muscat Bailey A, which is relatively unusual in Iwate, adding a floral aroma to its blended red wine.
Takahashi Vineyard
Owner-winemaker Yoshikazu Takahashi built more than 20 years of experience at Edel Wine, Shiwa Fruits Park and through training in Austria before opening his winery in 2015.
The dry Riesling Lion looks versatile enough for a wide range of occasions.
Suzumi no Oka Winery
Noda Village in Iwate is famous for wild grapes, which are said to include several different lineages.
This native grape has long been valued as a nourishing food and dietary supplement.
The winery previously outsourced production to Kuzumaki Winery but now vinifies at its own facility.
