UK Wine Magazine Decanter Conducts Its First Winery Reporting Tour in Japan, Visiting Yamanashi

From Thursday, July 17 through Sunday, July 20, Yamanashi Prefecture has welcomed a reporting visit by the influential UK wine magazine Decanter as part of the prefecture-supported Yamanashi wine export project KOJ, Koshu of Japan.

It is the first time the publication has been successfully invited to conduct this kind of winery reporting tour in Japan. Nine wineries in Yamanashi are being covered to communicate the appeal of the wine region to audiences in Japan and overseas.

Here are the details.

About Decanter

Founded in 1974, Decanter is a UK wine magazine distributed in 90 countries. It has about 900,000 digital readers and roughly 500,000 social-media followers in total.

Its activities extend beyond publishing to include the Decanter World Wine Awards, one of the world’s largest wine competitions.

For this visit, Decanter journalist Sylvia Wu, one of the publication’s editors with deep expertise in Asian wine, is reporting from Yamanashi.

About the Reporting Tour

The tour began on Thursday, July 17 at Suntory Tomi no Oka Winery in Kai City, which has won the top Platinum award at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

KOJ Executive Committee Chair Shigekazu Misawa explained Yamanashi wine’s technical quality, producers’ dedication, and the region’s history as the birthplace of Japanese wine to Decanter journalist Sylvia Wu.

Explaining why Koshu was selected for Decanter’s first such reporting visit in Japan, Wu noted that Koshu is the best-known Japanese grape variety internationally and praised Yamanashi as a unique wine region combining highly skilled producers with diverse terroirs.

The reporting tour is scheduled to cover nine wineries over four days through Sunday, July 20.
