Many Japanese wine fans are constantly exploring new food and wine pairings.
When an ingredient seems difficult to pair with wine, the usual approach is to find a wine that works with that ingredient.

“Menma That Pairs Well with Wine” was developed by Menma-ya Daimon, the company that first sold seasoned menma domestically in Japan.
In April 2024, the company jointly developed “Menma That Pairs Well with Beer” with Baeren Beer, a globally recognized craft brewer from its home city of Morioka. Building on that product, it launched menma designed for sake, shochu, highballs and Shaoxing wine in October of the same year, attracting attention.
All of the products have reportedly become popular, and after receiving many requests for a wine version, the company finally achieved a flavor it was satisfied with and decided to launch it.
Features of “Menma That Pairs Well with Wine”
The product reflects a number of carefully considered choices.
It uses rare, fully fermented raw material from Taiwan and is finished using a special method different from ordinary menma.
The result is a crisp, snappy and satisfying texture.
As the name suggests, the seasoning was developed specifically to work with wine.
It has a Western-style flavor with the fresh aroma of basil and a subtle garlic accent, and is said to pair especially well with white wine and light-bodied red wine.
Consideration has also gone into storage and serving ideas.
The shelf life is six months from production, and unopened packages can be stored at room temperature.
For an easy variation, the menma and its liquid can be tossed directly with boiled pasta for a dish with an enjoyable texture.
Paired with Japanese wine, it should be even more appealing.
